Questions from Readers
How did you get the idea for The Secret Room of Kaatu Temple?
I have been to India several times and enjoy the beauty of its many elaborate temples. I thought it would be fun to set an adventure in India and share some of its cultural aspects. I wanted an exciting story where kids would not only have to face a villain, but would also have to deal with the threats from the wild jungle itself.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are quite a few authors whose books I enjoy, but I really like the stories of Eva Ibbotson. Her books are creative and fun and inspiring. I also really enjoy the mysteries of Joan Lowery Nixon. And the books of Cornelia Funke are great as well.
Were you an English major in college?
No. I was a psych major. Although I enjoy reading and writing, I just wasn't interested in majoring in English.
What book do you wish you would have written?
Hmm. I would say "Of Human Bondage", "Gone with the Wind", or "Pride and Prejudice".
Is Burkett Mountain (from The Remedy) real or imagined?
It is an imaginary place, but it is based on my hiking adventures. I really enjoy the outdoors whether it be woodsy, rocky, hilly, or sandy. I thought Burkett Mountain was a perfect home for a jarrlock!
Are you working on anything right now?
Yes. I am working on a story about a girl who travels to India with her father. They are on a train and it crashes. They both survive, but they are separated. The unconscious girl is taken in by an Indian couple, who soon discovers that the girl has lost her memory. While she is adjusting to her new life, her father is searching for her, and he ends up getting involved with some shady characters.
For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
I have always been a traditional paper/hard back book reader. I like having the book in my hands and sticking a bookmark between the pages. But lately, I’ve tried out a few ebooks on my computer and it has worked out pretty well. I like being able to choose a book in the comfort of my own home and then reading it right away.
Are you planning more adventures for Joss, Anton, and Domino?
I hadn't planned to have more books about Joss and her friends, but since several readers have asked this question, I'm thinking about it. : )
