Scene 1: Village of Bumblewood
Setting: A small country village. People of the town are talking to each other. (Baker, Baker’s daughter, Miller, Rose, Eliza, and Pearl standing in a group)
Narrator: Thank you all for coming. Today we will present a play called “Rumpelstiltskin”. In the small, quiet village of Bumblewood, the baker and her daughter and the miller and her three daughters have met in the town square.
Baker: My sweet, little daughter baked some tasty tarts that everyone enjoyed.
Baker’s daughter: Yes, mother. (smiles shyly)
Miller: Well, my three daughters, Rosa, Eliza, and Pearl, ground the wheat into fine, white flour.
Rosa, Eliza, and Pearl: Yes, indeed, mother.
Baker: (louder) Well, my daughter baked a scrumptious chocolate cake.
Miller: (getting more animated) Well, my three daughters milled 40 bags of flour in half an hour!
Baker: (louder) Well, my daughter is so wonderful! She can bake the most delicious apple pie in the kingdom!
Miller: Well, my three daughters are the most amazing girls in the kingdom! They can spin straw into gold!
Rosa, Eliza, and Pearl: (surprised) Umm, mother!
Baker: Oh my! How wonderful!
Baker’s daughter: That is amazing!
Narrator: Just then the Queen and her lady-in-waiting arrive.
Queen: Lady-in-waiting, find out why the town’s people are so excited.
Lady-in-waiting: (bowing) Yes, your majesty. (approaches the town’s people) What is going on here?
Baker: The Miller’s daughters can spin straw into gold!
Baker’s daughter: Yes! Yes! They can!
Lady-in-waiting: (returns to Queen) Your majesty, the Miller’s daughters can spin straw into gold!
Queen: Straw into gold! Can this be true? Bring the Miller and her daughters to me.
Lady-in-waiting: (bowing) Yes, your majesty. (approaches the Miller and her daughters) Please come with me. The Queen wishes to speak with you. (The Miller and her daughters are nervous, but they follow the lady-in-waiting over to the Queen.)
Miller, Rosa, Eliza, Pearl: (bow before the Queen)
Queen: I hear that your daughters can spin straw into gold. Is this true?
Miller: Well, I, um, they… (nervously)
Queen: I am going to take your daughters to my castle to spin some straw into gold. If they can perform this task, then I will have them marry my three sons. If they can not spin the straw into gold, then I will feed them to my crocodiles!
Miller, Rosa, Eliza, and Pearl: (very worried, look at each other and say together) Ahhhh!
(The Queen, the Lady-in-waiting, and the Miller’s daughters go off to the castle.)
Miller: (chews her fingernails) Ooops!
Narrator: So things weren’t looking very good for the Miller’s daughters. They were taken to the Queen’s castle and put in a room filled with straw.
