Stone Soup: A Play for Kids
Scene 1: Tired Travelers
Setting: The village of Butterworthy
Narrator: Thank you all for coming. Today we will present the play “Stone Soup”. Long, long ago, three travelers were seeking their fortune when they came to the town of Butterworthy. They had traveled a great distance and were very hungry.
(Travelers enter. Traveler 1 is carrying a ladle and Traveler 2 is carrying a pot. The stone should be set on the back of the stage.)
Traveler 1: (speaks to other travelers) We have certainly traveled a great distance, my friends.
Traveler 2: I’m sooo hungry. I wish I had some roast beef and potatoes and corn and chocolate cake. (rubs stomach)
Traveler 1: I wish I had some fried chicken and macaroni and cheese and green beans and apple pie. (licks lips)
Traveler 3: I wish I had some asparagus.
Travelers 1 and 2: What? (Traveler 1 and Traveler 2 look at Traveler 3 in disbelief).
Traveler 1: Let’s ask the kind people of this village to share their food with us.
Traveler 2 and 3: Yes, oh yes!
(Travelers walk up to Villager 1)
Traveler 1: Hello neighbor.
Traveler 2: We are very hungry. Do you have any food to share?
Traveler 3: Like asparagus? (Everyone looks at Traveler 3)
Villager 1: No, umm … a strong wind came and blew all my food away.
Traveler 3: Really?
Villager 1: Yes, oh, yes!
Travelers: Okay, bye.
Narrator: So the travelers decided to try a different house.
(The travelers walk to the other side of the stage while the chorus sings.)
Chorus:
We’re so hungry, we must find some food.
Bread or sausage, something to be chewed.
Please open up your doors to us,
Share your food we will not fuss.
We’re not picky, this you must conclude.
We’ll eat anything, fried, baked, or stewed. (Walk up to Villager 2)
Traveler 1: Hello neighbor.
Traveler 2: We are very hungry. Do you have any food to share?
Traveler 3: Like asparagus? (Everyone looks at Traveler 3)
Villager 2: No, umm … a gorilla came and ate all my food.
Traveler 3: Really?
Villager 2: Yes, oh, yes!
