Sendak was born in New York City on June 10, 1928. He lost many relatives during the Holocaust, which greatly influenced his life. Sendak's partner of 50 years, Eugene Glynn was a psychoanalyst. Sendak donated one million dollars to the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services when Glynn died in 2007. Sendak died May 8, 2012, at age 83, from complications of a stroke.
