The Little Red Hen: A Play for Kids
Scene 1: Finding the Grains
Setting: A small farmyard. The animals are wandering around or sitting.
Narrator: Thank you all for coming. Today we will present a play called “The Little Red Hen”. As our play begins, it is a beautiful day and all of the animals on Farmer Joe’s farm are out in the farmyard.
Animal Chorus: (sings) Welcome to the farmyard. Welcome everyone. Welcome to the farmyard where every day is fun!
Little Red Hen: (walks up to Cat) Good morning, Cat. Isn’t it a beautiful day?
Cat: Yes, Little Red Hen. It is purrrr-fect!
Dog: (Walks up to Cat and Little Red Hen. Hands Little Red Hen a stick.) Good morning. Can you throw this stick for me to chase?
Little Red Hen: Why certainly, Dog! (Little Red Hen tosses stick. Dog chases after it, picks it up, and brings it back.)
Little Red Hen: Time for breakfast. Come here my little chickies! Let’s scratch around to find something good to eat.
Chicks: (Scurry over. Scratch at ground with feet.)
Little Red Hen: (Bends over, looks at ground.) Well, looky here! I found some wheat grains. (Picks up grains.)
Chicks: (Gather round.) Oooo! Grains of wheat!
Little Red Hen: What should we do with these grains?
Chicks: (Shrug shoulders and look at each other.) I don’t know. What should we do?
Little Red Hen: (Taps finger on chin.) Hmmm. Well, we could eat them right now.
Chicks: (Hop up and down.)I want one! I want one!
Little Red Hen: Or…. we could plant the grains and grow some wheat to make a delicious loaf of bread.
Chicks: (Hop up and down.) Yay! Bread! Yum! Plant the grains! Plant the grains!
(Pig, Duck, Mouse, Dog, Cat come over to Little Red Hen.)
Cat: What is going on?
Dog: Why is everyone so excited?
Pig: (Frowns grumpily.) Why are your chicks peeping so loudly?
Little Red Hen: I found some grains and I am going to plant them to grow some wheat to make some bread.
Duck: Oooo! I love warm bread just out of the oven.
Mouse: I like bread with lots and lots of butter. (Smacks lips.)
Little Red Hen: Who will help me plant the grains?
Cat: Sorry, I can’t help you. I have to …um… lick my paws. (Starts licking paws and walks off stage.)
Dog: I can’t help either. I am very busy chasing my tail. (Goes around in a circle, then runs off stage.)
Duck: Um… I would like to help but I have to go swim in the pond. (Waddles off stage.)
Mouse: I’m sorry, but I have to go run around in the barn. (Scurries off stage.)
Pig: I can’t help plant the grain. I have to go take a mud bath. (Walks off stage.)
Little Red Hen: Well, it looks like I will just have to plant the grain myself. (Walks off stage and Chicks follow in a row.)
Narrator: So the Little Red Hen planted the grain all by herself.
Animal Chorus: (sings)
Did you hear what I just said?
Not I! Not I! Not I!
Please help me make a loaf of bread.
Not I! Not I! Not I!
If you can’t help me once or twice then please do not expect a slice.
Who will help me make some bread?
Not I! Not I! Not I!
(Everyone exits.)
